Title:

Limitations of the Use of Mobile Devices and Smart Environments for the Monitoring of Ageing People

Authors:

Ivan Miguel Pires, Nuno M. Garcia, Nuno Pombo and Francisco Flórez-Revuelta

Abstract: The monitoring of the daily life of ageing people is a research topic widely explored by several authors, which they presented different points of view. The different research studies related to this topic have been performed with mobile devices and smart environments, combining the use of several sensors and techniques in order to handle the recognition of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) that may be used to monitor the lifestyle and improve the life's quality of the ageing people. However, the use of the mobile devices has several limitations, including the low power processing and the battery life. This paper presents some different points of view about the limitations, combining them with a research about use of a mobile application for the recognition of activities. At the end, we conclude that the use of lightweight methods with local processing in mobile devices is the best method to the recognition of the ADL of ageing people in order to present a fast feedback about their lifestyle. Finally, for the recognition of the activities in a restricted space with constant network connection, the use of smart environments is more reliable than the use of mobile devices.

TechPaper - An Interactive Learning Information System Game

Authors:

Filipe Portela, José Correira, Bruno Ferreira, Tiago Ribeiro, Carlos Pinheiro, Vitor Costa, Filipe Lameiras and Manuel Filipe Santos

Abstract: Nowadays, the presence of technologies in people’s daily life is constantly increasing and, consequently, accessing information is easier. Keeping this in mind and allying it to the need to captivate students attention to take advantage of activities and events, TechPaper game was created. The goal of this game is to stimulate the interest of the participants by being captivating, disruptive, innovative, and because it consisted of a set of fun challenges, very enriching (soft and hard skills) and practiced outdoors. The TechPaper was created entirely from scratch by students in articulation with a professor of the information systems department, with the purpose of including the game in the event (TSI.2.MARKET) and integrate all the participants of the event assigning them a role. This game consists of several challenges designed to test the knowledge of participants and compel them to work in teams with people of different ages, genres and profiles. A proof of concept of this game was deployed, and the results are motivating. Considering all the opinions, we can conclude that the implementation of this game was a success at all levels and that it has the capability to be implemented and played in other realities, events, scenarios or institutions.

Iron Value Classification in Patients Undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis using Data Mining

Authors:

Catarina Peixoto, Hugo Peixoto, José Machado, António Abelha and Manuel F. Santos

Abstract: In this article, Data Mining classification techniques are employed, in order to classify as normal or not-normal the iron values from a patients’ blood analysis. The dataset used is relative to patients that were subjected to Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) treatment. Weka software was used for testing several classification algorithms into such data set. The main purpose is finding the best suitable classification algorithm, with a pleasing performance in classifying the instances of the data, whereas preserving low rate of false positives. The IBk algorithm achieved the best performance, being able to correctly classify 97.39% of the instances.

Technology Devices for Eldercare

Authors:

Karen C. Olufokunbi

Abstract: The discourse of this paper is to examine some of the various devices used for Eldercare. In the literature, there exist assistive devices, assistive technology devices, smart homes projects and systems that cater for older people. These can be used to enhance graceful aging and sound health to solve the problem of the elderly living productive, fulfilled and longer lives. The process of rehabilitation is also important and these devices play a major role in prolonging life. Health Buddy and AlereNet systems are useful in heart failure management. A unique smart home facility, TigerPlace, utilizes university staff and students for Eldercare. The role of technologies in the ultimate care of the elderly is very important and will continue to be in the limelight in the future.

Measurement of the Reaction Time in the 30-S Chair Stand Test using the Accelerometer Sensor Available in off-the-Shelf Mobile Devices

Authors:

Ivan Miguel Pires, Diogo Marques, Nuno Pombo, Nuno M. Garcia, Mário C. Marques and Francisco Flórez-Revuelta

Abstract: The 30-s Chair Stand Test (CST) is commonly used with elderly people for assessing the lower limbs strength, which can provide sufficient information regarding the general mobility and fall risk. The mobile devices are widely used for the acquisition of the different physical and physiological data from the sensors available, including the accelerometer. In this way, the aim of the present study consisted on the development of an automatic method for the measurement of the reaction time (RT) based on the 30-s CST using a mobile device. Besides that, the data acquisition through an accelerometer allows the assessment of different variables, such as the maximum values of the acceleration, the instant velocity, the maximum force and the peak power, that may contribute to a better understanding of the physical demands during the 30-s CST performance. The results presented in this study demonstrated that the calculation of the RT and the different variables during the 30-s CST performance is possible, opening new possibilities for the development of scientific projects, namely those that encompasses the motor and cognitive training of elderly people.
